Taiwanese game conference “Taipei Game Developers Forum 2016 TGDF”

As one of Taiwan’s largest game industry events, along with Taipei Game Show,Taipei Game Developers Forum 2016 TGDF” was held at the Taipei Cultural and Creative Building in Taipei, Taiwan from July 1st to 2nd, 2016.

As I expected, Taipei in July had a tropical climate with temperatures exceeding 33 degrees Celsius during the day and 28 degrees Celsius at night. The venue was air-conditioned, but the atmosphere was very lively due to the enthusiasm of the people.

The event centered on three sections: “lectures,” “game exhibits,” and “business people meetings.”

In the lecture, various experiences of indie game developers in game development were shared, led by Mr. Wu Yihin, CEO of Taiwan’s leading game company, “Hina Technology”.
for example,
“Initial financing: Is it enough to borrow money?”
“Selecting projects: which one to stop?”
“Publisher: Should I use it?”
“Promotion: Throw in money?”
“Release: Update frequency?”
“Personnel management: Is it enough to make a profit?”
This is probably a challenge that every indie developer team encounters.

Since Mr. Wu is one of Taiwan’s leading game development leaders, his words had great meaning, and I’m sure the attendees at the venue had a great benefit as well.

Many games were also exhibited at the venue.
Let’s take a look.

Title 1 “Dungeon Pinball”

Developer: Raysol Games

“Dungeon Pinball” is developed by a team of Taiwanese indie game developers, but it uses Japanese-style graphics.
This action RPG is based on the exhilarating feeling of pinball, where the bullets fly, and has been devised by adding character and attributes to the bullets.

In addition to just firing bullets, the content is rich in variety, with puzzle elements prepared for each stage.

In addition, the story of this title is expressed using “manga” which is compatible with the game, and one of the points is that you can enjoy the manga in addition to playing the game. I really hope they release the continuation of the manga.

This work has already been released on the Japanese iOS app store and Android Google Play.

Title 2 “Dragon Fin Soup”

Developer: GRIMM BROS

“Dragon Fin Soup” is a semi-real-time action RPG game set in a world that combines medieval and fantasy.
Players explore various worlds with the main character, obtain items, and complete missions while repelling enemies and monsters.

Most of the TGDF participants were Taiwanese, but the development team for this game was notable for its multinational membership.
I was also a little surprised to see so many international teams participating in the Taipei gaming event.

“Dragon Fin Soup” is currently available on Steam, PS3, PS4, PSVITA, etc.

Title 3 “The Hidden Person”

Developer: Yuki Dobe

“Subbinsha” is a work that is similar to a suspense escape game.
The story begins with the suicide of a high school girl and explores the mystery behind it, the reason for the suicide.

The graphics are close to Japanese art style and are of a very high standard. I was surprised to learn that this work is the graduation work of a university student team.

Once you start, it’s hard to stop playing the game where you unravel deep mysteries step by step.

“Hibakusha” is currently under development, and I look forward to its future release and Japanese translation.

Finally, my thoughts on the Taiwanese game industry after receiving TGDF

Although I am Taiwanese, I have lived overseas for a long time, so this is my first time participating in a gaming event in Taiwan.
I am very surprised and happy that there are such high-level indie developers in Taiwan.
Personally, I am looking forward to further development of the Taiwanese game industry in the future, and I sincerely hope that more and more interesting games will be developed.
