I completed the new text adventure “A Dark Room” on Switch and would like to introduce it to you.
What kind of game?
This work is a remake of the browser game released in 2013. It’s a game that combines a clicker-like system with a system reminiscent of Zork, a forerunner of text adventures.
It’s okay if you don’t understand. Click on the high-impact icon to get started.
Then, true to the title, you wake up in a pitch-black room.
At first, all you can do is light a fire, but as the story progresses, the things you can do will increase.
Build traps out of wood, hunt animals, process fur and meat, and gradually enrich your base. In the meantime, keep the fire lit and the light out.
A story that progresses at a fixed timing. Just one sentence can make your imagination run wild.
Selective events also occur from time to time. Even if you fail, it will not be game over.
Over time, the number of workers will increase, and the things that can be done will increase. It’s hard to tell because the screen is so plain, but it’s a lot of fun.
There is also exploration
As your base grows, you will be able to explore outside. This is also not as difficult as it looks.
When enemies appear, defeat them using the weapons you obtained. As the battle progresses actively, selecting commands using the direction keys may not be enough. Play on your touchscreen.
The story progresses further through exploration. It was also disturbing.
Is this the end?
The ending was meaningful, so you might be able to enjoy a different story if you try “without building a hut” on your second playthrough. It seems difficult, so I’ll stop here.
You can now listen to the developer’s voice comments, but it’s in English, so I’m disappointed.
It’s fun to manage
Even though it’s just text, it’s a game that draws you in right away, and the gameplay is so fun that you’ll keep playing until the end. It’s not difficult because the commands increase little by little, and it was nice to have an ending.
