I participated in the Business Day of Tokyo Game Show 2024.
The overall impression was that while large-scale game events are shrinking worldwide, it seems like Tokyo Game Show is expanding steadily.
We set a new record for the highest number of visitors on the two business days, proving this fact. The number of exhibitors was also the highest ever.
As someone on the edge of the Japanese gaming industry, I was happy to see that Japan functions as a global hub for the gaming industry, with many visitors from overseas.
This year’s Tokyo Game Show had a lot of visitors from China, and I wonder why? So I asked some of my Chinese friends who were attending the event.
One is that even though China is in a recession, there are still companies with a lot of cash, and Japanese IP and game content are still popular as investment destinations. Although it is no longer possible to invest in just about any game, there are many Chinese companies and investors who want to expand Japanese content globally.
The other thing is that Japan as a market is very attractive. The Chinese game market seems to be stagnant due to stricter regulations and business confidence in China, and from that perspective, it seems that the Japanese game market still has a chance to make money.
In fact, there were many exhibitors from Chinese companies, and I think there was also a lot of participation from people related to them.
Well, now that the Tokyo Game Show is over, it’s finally starting to feel like the end of the year is coming. There are many more events to watch this year, including China’s WePlay, Taiwan’s G-EIGHT, India’s IGDC, and South Korea’s G-Star.
I would like to do my best and report on the remaining three months of this year.
