The release of Romancing SaGa 2 Revenge of the Seven, a remake of Romancing SaGa 2, is fast approaching. The trial version was released the other day, so many of you may have already played it.
I have fond memories of playing the original Super Famicom version, and am eagerly awaiting the release of the remake.
In this article, I’d like to write a little bit about why I’m so excited about remakes of games from about 30 years ago, while feeling nostalgic for the past.
Reality that is mainstream but different from FF
At that time, Square and Enix had not yet merged, and Romancing SaGa 2 was released as a Square title. At the time, when it came to Square’s titles, the Final Fantasy (FF) series was overwhelmingly popular, and Romancing Saga was an FF-like RPG released by Square. ” I believed.
I think the boys at the time probably felt the same way.
Although Romance Saga is similar to Final Fantasy, it has its own unique sense of realism, and 2 in particular had an immersive feeling in which the player felt like they were creating the history of the empire themselves, and felt like they were intervening in a larger history.
This perspective of creating history was something that Final Fantasy didn’t have, and I think it was a very cool scenario at the time.
Nowadays, open world games are commonplace, and there are many games that are much larger in terms of grandeur, but I still think the worldview of Romancing Saga 2, where you lead an empire while weaving history, still applies in modern times. That’s what I think.
Now that I’m an adult, I’m very interested in what kind of feelings I get from this title.
Inspiration system and balance adjustment
Romancing Saga 2 has several distinctive systems, such as formations and composition techniques, but the system that allows you to come up with special moves during battle is one of my favorite points.
It’s a great feeling when you flash a powerful technique in the middle of a battle.
However, each special move naturally has its own strength, and it tended to be something like “as long as you learn this move, you’ll be fine to some extent”, so in order to reach that point, you have to develop it from the beginning of play. There was a problem that weapons and inherited skills became standard.
Of course, following the standard route is part of the fun of the game, but I hope that the remake version will have some balance adjustments that will expand the range of strategies.
What will happen to the delivery to the Redon Plateau?
In Romancing Saga 2, when an emperor dies, his skills can be passed on to the next emperor.
Then, if you want to replace the emperor or rebuild your party for some reason, it will be faster to have the emperor die, so a game technique is to purposely go to the Redon Plateau and wipe out everyone. There was.
This technique is not particularly necessary if you are playing normally, but it was essential if you wanted to completely master the elements in the game.
This seems to have been alleviated in the remastered version, but I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in the remake.
I think that this kind of design may be considered bad in today’s game common sense, but in previous games, this kind of technique was part of the fun of the game, and I would like it to remain if possible. I am.
Looking forward to more remakes in the future!
I think that remake versions of games are released for various reasons, but one of them is that they are targeted at the current middle-aged generation, who were once young boys.
This is also good for those who are targeted, as by playing old games you can remember what it was like back then and forget for a moment all the difficulties that come with being an adult.
For adults who go to the lengths of searching for past game consoles, it’s great to be able to play the same games again in today’s environment.
For children, it is also a good thing that old masterpieces are revived with today’s technology, as it increases the chances of them being exposed to classic games.
Unlike novels, the playing environment of games is influenced by the technical requirements of each era.
I completely agree with the idea of old games being revived in modern times.
I hope that many classic games will be remade in the future.
