[Report] Experience Mr. Tokoronyori’s latest work “Owakare no Hoshi”! The theme is “Why do people mourn?” [BitSummit Volume 6]

Indie game festival “BitSummit”. It is one of the largest events in Japan, attracting indie game developers from Japan and all over the world, and although it was held in Kyoto, which is unusual for a game event, many game fans gathered at the venue.

There were many edgy game titles on display that major game companies don’t have, and among them, the company that has produced many hits such as “Hitoribocchi Planet”.Tokonyori’s new game “Owakare no Hoshi”I played it and would like to introduce it to you!

“Owakare no Hoshi” is a game with a deep theme, where you mourn by fulfilling the “things you wanted” of machines.

“Owakare no Hoshi” is a village of “machines that think they are humans”, where the only surviving child’s machine borrows the body of a dead villager. We mourn each person and say goodbye properly. This is a game that aims to.

However, Nyori’s true essence, a decadent, nihilistic worldview with a sense of apocalypse, is still alive and well. This unique atmosphere, inherited from the beginning of the series, continues to attract many people.

In “Owakare no Hoshi,” the protagonist borrows the body of a dead machine and mourns for it.

Each of them who died had something they wanted to do tomorrow. Using the remaining memories as clues,You can “mourn” them by fulfilling “what they wanted” in their place.

By fulfilling your wishes and paying your respects, you will be able to trace even deeper memories of the deceased person.

why did they want to do that? What was I thinking? What happened? Their remaining thoughts, memories, and the truth will be revealed.

By fulfilling your wishes and paying your respects, you will be able to say goodbye to them. This cycle is the flow of this game.

In this game, we mourn not “humans” but “machines that think they are humans”, but what they wanted to do,The content of what was said was truly human and something that even we could relate to.
By operating the mechanical bodies yourself, tracing their memories, and taking the time to fulfill their wishes and mourn them, you will begin to empathize with them without realizing it, and when you say “goodbye,” you will be moved to your heart. There was something.

This feeling is something you can’t get by just saying goodbye to a machine through a game, and it’s like saying goodbye to a deceased human being.I felt that.

Interview with developer “Tokoronyori”

After playing the game, I couldn’t help but feel emotional, and after taking some time to recover, I went to the developer’s office and asked Mr. Nyori a little bit about “Owakare no Hoshi”!

Q.What are the specialties that are unique to Owakare no Hoshi?

Mr. Tokoronyori “This time, we were also conscious of making it “PC-friendly,” so that the graphics would look great even on large screens. Also, up until now, we’ve been using tricks to create bad expressions, such as moving objects frame by frame, but this time we also tried animation.”

Q.What were some of the difficulties you faced in developing “Owakare no Hoshi”?

Mr. Tokoronyori: “Until now, we had to do things like obtain an item ⇒ proceed ⇒ event occur ⇒ obtain an item…I had no experience with “game grammar”.In a sense, I hadn’t made a “game” in this sense, soThis time I decided to face the game.It was difficult, but I was particular about incorporating these elements.”

Q. What do you want users to feel with “Owakare no Hoshi”? Is there such a thing?

Mr. Tokoronyori “The theme is “Mourning”is. Each person,When a loved one dies, there is a certain way that you would like to mourn, or this is how you would like to mourn.must. I hope you will think about and remember these things.”

Mr. Tokoro Nyori: “There is no one who does not mourn when someone dies. However,If you think about things that are efficient and rational, you shouldn’t go out of your way to do something to a dead creature.Yet people mourn the dead. I didn’t even know why they did it, so I wanted to understand it myself.”

Mr. Special said, “Our theme this time is “Funeral”. Each person will certainly have thoughts about wanting to remember their important people when they pass away, or wanting to have the opportunity to meeting to commemorate them. I hope that we can reflect on those things and remember them.

Summary

When you play “Owakare no Hoshi” on a large screen, you can see that it is made with very elaborate pixel art, and it is very beautifully and delicately drawn to give a very convincing world view. It is. I felt that a lot of attention and effort was put into this pixel art alone.
Of course, in addition to the graphics, the music and SE are also of high quality, and the original worldview is brightly colored.

Regarding the theme of this work, “Mourning,” recent research suggests that the culture and concept of “Mourning” may also be seen in animals other than humans. However, there is no doubt that humans express their feelings about mourning most clearly, such as by offering flowers, erecting gravestones, and displaying photographs of the deceased. This is not a recent phenomenon; it has been practiced since ancient times.

I’m sure many of you have attended a funeral as a child and wondered vaguely, “Why are they doing this?”
“Why do people mourn?”It might be a good idea to think about that again.
