Tokyo Sandbox, an indie game event scheduled to be held on April 28th, has been suddenly postponed. The new date has been set for June 22nd.
Tokyo Sandbox, which is hosted by Kevin from Singapore, has established a unique position as an indie game event with many exhibitors from overseas, and it was assumed that it would return to a growth path after being canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. In fact, due to Kevin’s circumstances, cancellation was being considered.
However, the reason behind this postponement was that volunteers raised their hands to ensure the survival of Tokyo Sandbox, and it was decided that the event would be postponed.
In this article, rather than talking about the circumstances behind the scenes, I would like to explain a little about the charm and highlights of Tokyo Sandbox, which is restarting with a new system.
As mentioned earlier, Tokyo Sandbox is sponsored by Mr. Kevin from Singapore, and is characterized by the fact that many people from overseas open stores through his network.
There is an event called “Tokyo indies” which is held every month in Akihabara as an event related to indie games hosted by people from overseas. It is a fair-sized exhibition and it is a place where you can experience indie games from overseas. Tokyo Sandbox is probably the best event. It’s a great place for game fans who want to experience indie games from overseas, and it’s also a valuable place for exhibitors to interact with game developers from various countries.
I believe that it is really important for game developers to experience overseas games and interact with overseas game developers.
Considering today’s world where it has become commonplace for even indie games to be released worldwide, it is really important for game developers to know about other countries. Tokyo Sandbox can be said to be excellent in that sense because it allows you to do this while staying in Japan.
It’s an interesting place for publishers to learn about not only Japanese indie games but also overseas indie games. Many of the indie game developers exhibiting are originally interested in Japan, and in many cases they have already made contact with publishers, but it is still a good opportunity for publishers to interact directly with multiple overseas developers at events. It would be great to be able to interact with them.
Many overseas game developers consider Japan to be a sacred place for games, and they seem to be very happy to have a reason to come to Japan. Along with the Tokyo Game Show and BitSummit, Tokyo Sandbox is. It seems that growing up was one of the reasons.
For these reasons, I am very happy that Tokyo Sandbox has been postponed rather than canceled.
Tokyo Sandbox had operational drawbacks such as various administrative procedures and a little slowness in official announcements, but I think this will be improved under the new system in the future.
Organizers spend a lot of effort and, in some cases, money to make these indie game events happen.
I think it would be good if the industry and fans could create a good atmosphere so that good events can continue to be held as much as possible.
